The use of a NPWMF observer to compare 3D NEC-OSEM FORE + 2D NEC-OSEM in whole-body PET

چکیده
The Fourier Rebinning (FORE), which sorts 3D data into 2D data, requires that the 3D sinogram is previously corrected for non-quantitative physical effects. So, 2D sinograms are no longer Poisson distributed, an assumption behind OSEM (Ordered Subsets Expectation Maximization). This means that whenever data are corrected and OSEM is the reconstruction algorithm, the need to restore the Poisson characteristics is present. The NECtransformation method, whose principle is to transform the input data to their noise equivalent counts (NEC) such that the two first moments of the transformed data are equal, is a way to achieve that restoring. This is done either by weighting the input sinogram (p) by the ratio of its mean to its variance (NEC-scaling): ) ( 2 p p w σ = , or by adding to the data a factor which is equal to the difference between its variance and its mean (NEC-shifting): p p − ) g = ( 2 σ . The effects of all corrections, including FORE if used, are taken into account in the model for the variance. NEC-scaled data was used as input for the weighted OSEM, in both 2D and 3D cases:

A lesion detection observer study comparing 2-dimensional versus fully 3-dimensional whole-body PET imaging protocols.
UNLABELLED We compared the impact of 2-dimensional (2D) and fully 3-dimensional (3D) acquisition modes on the performance of human observers in detecting and localizing tumors in whole-body (18)F-FDG images. METHODS We selected protocols based on noise equivalent count (NEC) rates derived from a series of 2D and fully 3D whole-body patient and phantom acquisitions on a dual-mode PET scanner. ...

UNLABELLED We compare 3 image reconstruction algorithms for use in 3-dimensional (3D) whole-body PET oncology imaging. We have previously shown that combining Fourier rebinning (FORE) with 2-dimensional (2D) statistical image reconstruction via the ordered-subsets expectation-maximization (OSEM) and attenuation-weighted OSEM (AWOSEM) algorithms demonstrates improvements in image signal-to-noise...
متن کاملQuantitative comparison of analytic and iterative reconstruction methods in 2- and 3-dimensional dynamic cardiac 18F-FDG PET.
UNLABELLED The aim of this work was to compare the quantitative accuracy of iteratively reconstructed cardiac (18)F-FDG PET with that of filtered backprojection for both 2-dimensional (2D) and 3-dimensional (3D) acquisitions and to establish an optimal procedure for imaging myocardial viability with (18)F-FDG PET. METHODS Eight patients underwent dynamic cardiac (18)F-FDG PET using an interle...
متن کاملComparison of image quality with 62Cu and 64Cu-labeled radiotracers in positron emission tomography whole-body phantom imaging.
OBJECTIVE PET imaging is possible with copper (Cu) isotopes, (60)Cu, (61)Cu, (62)Cu and (64)Cu. Although (62)Cu- and (64)Cu-labeled radiotracers are often used for preclinical and clinical PET studies, we do not know which radiotracers have better image quality for tumor imaging. In this study, we compare image quality between (62)Cu and (64)Cu imaging with a different acquisition mode and reco...

UNLABELLED The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of the point-spread function (PSF) and time-of-flight (TOF) on improving (18)F-FDG PET/CT images in relation to reconstruction parameters and noise-equivalent counts (NEC). METHODS This study consisted of a phantom study and a retrospective analysis of 39 consecutive patients who underwent clinical (18)F-FDG PET/CT. The body phan...
